Faith in Action: Responding to Trump’s Reduction in Humanitarian Aid

The Trump & Elon DOGE Duo have been on a rampant anti spending spree since January 20th.

It’s been hard to keep up with all of their work, but some of the most impactful to me as a humanitarian aid worker has been the significant cuts to USAID and WHO.

Many non-profits/charities use grants and funding from WHO & USAID for at least part of their funding.

As a Christian, humanitarian aid feels like a great way to carry many of the commandments given to us, like loving your neighbor as yourself in Leviticus 19:18, or looking after widows and orphans in James 1:27.

Should we be upset that president Trump is ending these helpful programs? I would like to argue no, for several reasons.

While these organizations can include benefits, not all aid money goes towards Christian or even simply good humanitarian endeavors.

The World Health Organization has been pushing abortion rights in all countries, while USAID is being exposed for pumping millions of dollars of funding in to extreme liberal agendas around the world.

“I love the concept, but they turned out to be radical left lunatics. The concept of it is good but it’s all about the people.” -President Trump

Just a few of the recent funding items found in USAID contracts include:
-$2.5 Million to DEI in Serbia

-$70,000 on an Irish DEI musical

-$47,000 on transgender operas in Colombia

-$32,000 on transgender comic books in Peru

-$2 million for gender changes and “LGBT activism” in Guatemala

“As we dug into USAID it became apparent that what we have here is not an apple with a worm in it, but we have actually just a ball of worms. If you have an apple with a worm in it, you can take the worm out. If you have a whole ball of worms, it’s hopeless. USAID is a ball of worms. There is no apple. And when there is no apple you just need to get rid of the whole thing. That’s why it’s got to go. It’s beyond repair.” -Elon Musk

In the New Testament Jesus didn’t rebuke the Romans for not taking care of the sick or the poor. He rebuked the church. He told His followers to pay taxes to the empire that would hang Him on the cross. But gave them clear instructions that they were the ones to provide for the widows, orphans, the sick, and the needy.

Is it wrong for the government to help others? Of course not, but at what cost?

Many of the programs USAID and WHO are funding are both unbiblical and undermining the very countries and governments they are claiming to help.

Maybe this drastic shift in policy can be the spark that the Church needed to fulfill the second greatest commandment at home and abroad more than we have in over a century!

What if we as Christians got radical about helping the needy around the world, not just because we saw a really sad video, but because it opens gospel opportunities into the lives of some of the most hopeless and forgotten people on the planet?

With massive cuts to worldwide humanitarian funding, what better opportunity does the Church have than now to step up, carry the Hope of Christ to a broken and dying world while meeting the physical needs of both believers and the lost?

I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me; I was in prison and you visited me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and take you in, or without clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick, or in prison, and visit you?’“ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Matthew 25:36-40

As Christians let us take this opportunity to stand in the gap and bring the Great Commission to a lost and dying world.

As Christians let us take this opportunity to stand in the gap and bring the Great Commission to a lost and dying world. It’s what we have been called to do, after all.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
