A 7.3 magnitude earthquake happened off the coast of Japan approximately at 9:36 CST. It was preceded by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake 5 minutes prior. A tsunami threat was issued and later cancelled.

In 2011 multiple nuclear reactors were damaged in a 9.0 magnitude earthquake north of the current earthquake. A 46-foot tall tsunami overwhelmed the emergency backup systems at the nuclear facility causing a nuclear meltdown in 3 of the reactors.
