Here’s a quick rundown of several stories to keep an eye on this month. Most of the topics covered today are related to food, environmental regulations, and threats of war.

Ukraine

The continued conflict in Ukraine sets the stage for most of the stories in this month’s update.
The Russian invasion has had effects far beyond the two countries. The fallout from global food and energy markets has started to take its toll.
Humanitarian efforts are still underway in Ukraine and the surrounding nations.

German energy Crisis

Russia is shutting down the NORD Stream 1 pipeline for “maintenance”, sparking some fears that Russia will not turn it on after the scheduled maintenance ends. The repair is supposed to last 10 days from July 11th through July 21st.
Most of Germany’s gas (32%) comes via Russian pipelines.
Their current storage capacity is at 63%, well below the 90% needed to make it through the winter. Germany plans to reopen coal power plants to help ease energy concerns. Landlords are also turning down the heat in buildings.

Dutch Farmers

Farmers have led massive protests across the Netherlands after the Dutch government announced plans to reduce emissions by limiting fertilizers. The new plan would require a reduction of nitrogen emissions by up to 70% in some areas.

The farmers and supporters have blocked highways and supermarkets and even dumped manure on the steps of government offices. Online photos show empty supermarket shelves. The topic has not been covered much by the mainstream media.

Global Food Crisis

Lingering effects of the coronavirus, inflation, lack of fertilizer, droughts, extreme weather, blocked harbors, and war are all putting a massive strain on global food outlooks.

In June, the UN chief warned of an “unprecedented global food crisis”. UNICEF recently requested over $1 billion for humanitarian aid to prevent the deaths of 8 million children at risk of dying from undernutrition.

Preparedness Trumps Fear

We share alarming headlines not to produce fear but to spark preparedness.
Knowing what events are happening locally and globally allows you to be better prepared for the future.

House fires happen daily. It doesn’t mean we live every day in fear of our house burning down. Instead, we take rational steps to prepare (like having a fire extinguisher and smoke detector) and continue to move on with a good sense of situational awareness.
