Morocco Quake: Death Toll Quickly Surges Over 1,000

A powerful 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco Friday just after 11 PM local time. Videos on X (Twitter) show multiple buildings collapsing. One video showed a building split nearly in half.+

The death toll has now surpassed 2,000 with over 1,400 have seriously injured.

Videos from mountain villages in the Imlil region show rows of buildings completely collapsed.

This marks the first earthquake of magnitude 6 or greater in the region since 1900

The initial automated death toll estimates from the USGS PAGER system were surpassed and have been revised upward. The economic risk level has been classified as ‘red,’ indicating the highest level of impact with damages estimated to range between 1 to 10 billion dollars.

  1. I hadn’t looked at any of the footage yet. Seeing it on here, wow, I just can’t imagine what those people are feeling. Praying for them.
