The fires began after high winds knocked down power lines sparking several fires. Winds in excess of 100 mph quickly spread the flames across several cities in Boulder County. The fires were north of Denver by about 20 miles.

Over 500 structures were reported as affected Thursday afternoon. Video footage online shows full city blocks on fire throughout the evening.

Several news organizations are reporting this as the most destructive fire in Colorados history.
