Greek Alphabet will be used by WHO for Covid Variants

The World Health Organization (WHO) has updated its naming format for the Covid variants. There had previously been controversy over naming the virus after the country of origin. Names like Chinese Virus and Wuhan Virus were mostly removed from use and replaced with Covid, Coronavirus, and COVID-19.

The variants were initially identified by the location they were discovered in. Several of the strains were originally found in the UK, South Africa, Brazil, and India. Some people and organizations were concerned about the stigmatizing effects of using the country to identify the strain so a more scientific identification system was used. These were difficult to remember and took longer to pronounce though.

The new Greek naming system will not replace the scientific naming system but will be an easy and concise way to identify specific strains. The Greek alphabet has been a catch-all solution for several things in the scientific world. It was previously used for naming hurricanes after the initial list was exhausted.

Current variants of concern as named by WHO 6-1-21
